Playwright Daniel Lillford Interviewed on Art & Fine Living with Jona on Radio ShalomÂ
Playwright, actor and director Daniel Lillford made a guest appearance on Art & FineLiving with Jona to air March 23rd and 26th, 2008. In a lively conversation, the creator of The Mystery of Maddy Heisler, to premiere at the Centaur Theatre in Montreal in late March, spoke candidly about his fascination with the two great wars of the last century, about his own family’s strife in the German-occupied Channel Islands and about the making of the mystery which was already nominated for five East Coast awards.Â
The play is set in rural Nova Scotia during WWII, where a young local man falls in love with an older woman who arrives mysteriously and disappears in the midst of their rapturous love affair. Years later, the young man, now an aging mystery writer, is approached by a young woman carrying a small notebook, the contents of which open an unexpected door to the past.Â
Art & Fine Living with Jonais produced and hosted by Montrealer Jona Rapoport. The program showcases talents in theatre, music, opera, dance, literature and visual arts, with a delightful mix and commentary on fresh classical and jazz releases. The show airs on Sundays at 7pm and on Wednesdays at 3pm on Radio Shalom 1650 AM, and shows are archived on the host’s page at www.radio-shalom.ca for downloading.

Jona Rapoport to Represent Celebrated American Composer Lori LaitmanÂ
“It is difficult to think of anyone before the public today who equals her exceptional gifts for embracing a poetic text and giving it new and deeper life through music.” (Journal of Singing, 2007)
Canadian artist manager and publicist Jona Rapoport will be representing American composer Lori Laitman worldwide. Ms Rapoport has managed the career of several classical vocalists in the past, and is currently the producer and host of the radio program “Art & Fine Living with Jona” on CJRS 1650 in
Montreal. She is listed in the international directory of Musical America.
Lori Laitman is one of America’s most prolific and widely performed composers of art song. She has composed nearly 200 songs, setting the words of classical and contemporary poets to music, among them the lost voices of poets who perished in the Holocaust. The composer’s first opera, “Come to Me in Dreams” premiered by Cleveland Opera in 2005, and her upcoming opera, based on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Scarlet Letter”, to libretto by poet David Mason, will premiere at The University of Central Arkansas in the fall of 2008.Â
Laitman’s songs have been released on Albany Records, Naxos, Channel Classics and others, showcasing the talents of some of today’s top musicians. Among the many artists are: vocalists Phyllis Bryn-Julson, Jennifer Check, Patricia Green, Sari Gruber, William Sharp and Randall Scarlata; pianist Warren Jones; bassist Gary Karr; cellists Thomas Kraines and Marcy Rosen; saxophonist Gary Louie and violinist Juliette Kang.  In a review of her latest compilation, “Becoming a Redwood”, the prestigious Gramophone Magazine remarked:  “An extraordinarily impressive achievement… [which indicates] increasing evidence of a major talent. Lori Laitman’s beautiful, sensitively crafted songs deserve to be performed widely”.  A review of her 2000 release, “Mystery – The Songs of Lori Laitman” by Opera News says: “Composer Lori Laitman knows how to let the voice soar and explore…spinning lyrical neo-romantic vocal lines over shifting post-modern sonorities”. Â
A Journal of Singing review of her 2003 album, “Dreaming”,posits her firmly alongside another legendary composer: “This is a stunning collection of widely varied songs by one of the finest art song composers on the scene today…Lori Laitman deservedly stands shoulder to shoulder with Ned Rorem for her uncommon sensitivity to text, her loving attention to the human voice and its capabilities, and her extraordinary palette of musical colors and gestures”.Â
Lori Laitman graduated magna cum laude from Yale College and received her Master of Music degree in flute performance from The Yale School of Music. Her recordings are available on her website, www.artsongs.com, as well as Amazon and ITunes.Â
Sheet music can be ordered from Classical Vocal Reprints (1-800-298-7474), www.classicalvocalrep.com.Â

Hundreds gathered last month in Tel Aviv to pay their last respects to Yisrael “Poli” Poliakov, whose coffin was placed on stage at the Cameri Theater in the city.
Poliakov died recently at the Rabin Medical Center in Petah Tikva, surrounded by family. He was 66 years old.
At the memorial service, Poliakov’s fellow members of his comedy group “Hagashash Hahiver” - Gavri Banai and Shaike Levy- sang a song in his honor.
President Shimon Peres also eulogized the legendary actor, and said that “Hagashash provided the State of Israel what Shalom Aleichem granted the Jewish people- wisdom, positive compassion, and a playful ‘beating.’”
“Hagashash constituted a sort of harmonic and continuous cultural peak for many generations… generation after generation watched him and was entranced by his charm. He didn’t tire the people for a moment, who asked for more and more, was thirsty for more of ‘a taste of the past.’ Poli transformed a sad people into one that could not be saddened, and the entire threesome granted us the feeling that they were ours and we were theirs. Poli and his fellow colleagues’ contribution are inexistent in our world, and there is no suitable way to glorify it because it is priceless,” Peres said.
Science, Culture and Sport Minister Raleb Majadele also spoke at the memorial ceremony and said, “We are parting today from a beloved person. With his two hands, and together with his good friends, Yisrael Poliakov laid the bedrock for the entire Israeli culture.” Read the rest of this entry »

I was once an active member of the “Notes” project, which is an Israeli project handing a simple yet sophisticated hosting platform to unique Hebrew writers and artists (not necessarily famous ones, although some are).
The project is open to anyone writing in Hebrew, even if they don’t leave in Israel.
The project web site: http://www.notes.co.il .
The project is base on volunteers only, including the hosting company.
Recently, due to the project’s huge success (300,000 unique visitors every month), it came to a point that it needs real money to continue.
You can find the project’s managers call for help here: http://www.notes.co.il/extra/37343.asp (Hebrew).

Just four years ago, Nextbook got its start as an organization committed to promoting public library programs dedicated to Jewish topics. In short order, the ever-evolving nonprofit has conquered a swath of territory in the contested realm of Jewish arts and ideas, steadily expanding while maintaining its focus on Jewish cultural and intellectual life. Nextbook is the brainchild of Keren Keshet — the Rainbow Foundation — which sought to establish a single portal into the world of Jewish culture. Keren Keshet, an Israeli organization bankrolled by a wealthy American, Zalman C. Bernstein, originally managed Nextbook directly before spinning it off into an independent nonprofit in 2004. Its initial focus was public programming, with three cities — Seattle, Chicago and Washington, D.C. — selected to receive innovative Jewish programming in local libraries.
