Ruth Weisberg Exhibition at Skirball Center in LA

/*Posted by Eyal*/

This retrospective features three decades of painting and printmaking by celebrated Los Angeles artist Ruth Weisberg, dean of the Roski School of Fine Arts at the University of Southern California. In its first complete showing in twenty years, the ninety-four-foot-long masterwork, The Scroll, synthesizes universal life-cycle events with Weisberg’s experiences as an American Jewish woman, all portrayed in conjunction with scriptural motifs, Jewish history, and rabbinic legend. In addition to The Scroll, more than thirty paintings, drawings, and prints from throughout Weisberg’s career will be on view.

Vasily Grossman’s The Last Letter

/*Posted by Eyal*/

Vasily Grossman’s  The Last Letter
Sunday, June 3 at 2 pm
rsvp@spertus.edu.

Doreen FeitelbergVasily Grossman’s Life and Fate has been called “the greatest Russian novel of the 20th century” (Le Monde). Based on a powerful excerpt, The Last Letter is a poignant solo performance piece that channels the story of Grossman’s own mother, who was murdered in the 1941 German massacre of the Ukrainian city of Berdichev. This simple and deeply moving piece reveals the dignity of its heroine, a physician who, when recognizing her fate, describes her memories and passions in a final letter to her son. Performed by Doreen Feitelberg and directed by Jeffrey Ginsberg.

Doreen Feitelberg is an actress and educator originally from Johannesburg. She received her training at the University of Witwatersrand, the University of South Africa, and Trinity College, London. She holds the position of Life Vice President of the South African Guild of Speech and Drama Teachers, and was on the executive board of the Shakespeare Society of Southern Africa. Currently she serves on the faculty at Columbia College Chicago and is a member of the Chicago Jeff Awards Committee. Read the rest of this entry »

NextBook Festival - Acting Jewish (from JewishJournal)

/*Posted by Eyal*/

Read from Jewish Journal

NextBook site

nextbookfestival_la.gif

Just four years ago, Nextbook got its start as an organization committed to promoting public library programs dedicated to Jewish topics. In short order, the ever-evolving nonprofit has conquered a swath of territory in the contested realm of Jewish arts and ideas, steadily expanding while maintaining its focus on Jewish cultural and intellectual life. Nextbook is the brainchild of Keren Keshet — the Rainbow Foundation — which sought to establish a single portal into the world of Jewish culture. Keren Keshet, an Israeli organization bankrolled by a wealthy American, Zalman C. Bernstein, originally managed Nextbook directly before spinning it off into an independent nonprofit in 2004. Its initial focus was public programming, with three cities — Seattle, Chicago and Washington, D.C. — selected to receive innovative Jewish programming in local libraries. THE ART OF VINTAGE ISRAELI TRAVEL POSTERS, at Skirball in Los Angeles

/*Posted by Eyal*/

Opening April 5 to commemorate Israeli Independence Day (April 24), this insightful new exhibition surveys over 30 travel posters produced by Israeli government tourism agencies and both national and private transportation companies during the 1950s and 1960s. Among the most popular iconographic themes during this period are the portrayals of Israel as the ancient land of the Bible, as a place of unspoiled beauty and fascinating history, and as a thriving, modern nation.
