“Oedipus Complex”

We all know the story-or so we think-of a young man who unknowingly kills his father and marries his mother. Sophocles’ monumental treatment of this theme has been a staple of world theater for more than 2,000 years. In this bold and provocative re-telling of the myth, Goodman Artistic Associate and Tony Award- winning director and adaptor Frank Galati reimagines Sophocles’ tragedy, fusing it with the words and ideas of Sigmund Freud-the man whose revolutionary theories crossed the boundaries of science by using the art of myth, metaphor and dream to bring meaning to the ultimate human drama.

Pearl Zeltzer: Volunteer was focused on the arts

April 17, 2007
By Joe Rossiter
Free Press Staff Writer

True to her name, Pearl Zeltzer was a shining example of civic pride, leadership and generosity.

The mother of four and tireless volunteer had a long history of philanthropic activity within the Detroit community and played a significant role in bringing the arts to the area.

Mrs. Zeltzer, a retired registered nurse, died of pneumonia Wednesday at Providence Hospital in Southfield. She was 81 and lived in West Bloomfield.

“Inside that petite frame of hers was a powerhouse of a woman,” her youngest son, Jeremy Zeltzer, said. “She was a feisty go-getter who was so giving of her time and commitment because she didn’t mind sharing her good fortune with others.”

Mrs. Zeltzer was active in many local social service agencies, including Meals on Wheels and the Oakland County Department of Services for the Aging.

Along with her husband, George M. (Mike) Zeltzer, she received the National Foundation for Jewish Culture’s Patron Award for their sponsoring of Jewish arts and humanities. The couple also were named fellows of Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass., due to their work with the Brandeis National Women’s Committee and their contributions to Jewish culture.

Born Pearl Melnick in Detroit, she graduated from Central High School in 1942. During World War II she enrolled in Grace Hospital School of Nursing in Detroit with the intent of becoming a member of the Army Nurse Corps. She graduated after the war in 1947.

A year later, she met and married her husband and began raising a family while working part-time at Detroit Osteopathic Hospital and later Sinai Hospital.

Mrs. Zeltzer was on the Board of the Michigan Opera Theatre and was a Founders Society Associate for the Detroit Institute of Arts.

“She was consistently focused on how to expand the audience for ballet and dance,” said David DiChiera, founder and general director for the Michigan Opera Theatre and the Detroit Opera House. “Her ultimate goal was to bring more people to the art form so they could learn to appreciate and celebrate its beauty.”

In addition to her husband and son, survivors include three sons, David, Gary and Elliot; a sister, and seven grandchildren.

The Zeltzers have asked that donations be made to the NFJC’s Pearl Zeltzer fund for Choroegraphy.

ISRAELI AUTHOR ARRIVES TO NEW YORK TO SHOWCASE HER LATEST BIBLICAL NOVEL

April, 2007 — Avid novel fans are expected to descend on various New York locations in May. That is when Eva Etzioni-Halevy will be holding talks and book signings of her new novel THE GARDEN OF RUTH (published by Plume, a Division of Penguin). Etzioni’s arrival couldn’t be more timely. THE GARDEN OF RUTH follows the success of Etzioni-Halevy’s first biblical novel THE SONG OF HANNAH published in September 2005. THE GARDEN OF RUTH recently hit the bookshelves nationwide.
